The news about Cindy Kaza replacing Amy Allan on The Dead Files was huge news. (Definitely one of my most popular posts so far this year.) It was also met with some controversy. Some people embraced the change, others resisted.
I was excited to get the chance to ask her about that, and as a bonus I was able to ask a few more questions too. Here’s what Cindy Kaza had to say about stepping into the role of the new co-host on The Dead Files.
Haunt Jaunts: I’d love to give you the chance to speak your peace and maybe calm some fears because change is difficult, and the first tendency is to resist it. Which is the initial reaction from a lot of Dead Files fans, who were crushed that Amy stepped away from the show. HOWEVER, I read that she hand-picked you to take her spot. Can you talk a little bit about how that went? Did she call you up? Did you need a lot of convincing? What prompted you to say yes?
Cindy Kaza: Amy reached out to me when she decided to step away from The Dead Files and asked me if I’d be interested in joining the show. The Dead Files is a great show, and I was honored that Amy thought of me to fill in. Amy is truly an amazing medium. I know change is hard for fans, and I totally understand why Amy’s decision to take a step back from the show feels devastating to them. I’m grateful to her for recommending me. At the end of the day, some fans will be okay with the change and others will not and that’s completely understandable. My intention in joining the show was to show up for these families and do the very best that I could to help them. Everything else is icing on the cake.
HJ: Your gifts are similar to Amy’s but also different, yet at the end of the night, the goal is the same: to bring closure to families struggling with unwanted paranormal activity. Was there any case(s) this season you were especially proud of for the help you offered?
CK: All of the cases that Steve and I worked on were important, being that each family we visited was genuinely struggling to understand why they were experiencing the type of paranormal activity they were experiencing. What I’ve found is that most people want to be heard and want their experiences to be validated. People living with extreme paranormal activity in their homes often feel scared to share their experiences due to fear of judgment. A lot of people feel like they’re going crazy. I feel like Steve and I provided comfort to every family we visited, in one way or another. It’s really hard for me to choose one case over another as they’re all unique and powerful in their own ways.
HJ: You often employ techniques like automatic writing and drawing in your readings. Did you find that you relied on one more than the other with the cases this season, or did it just depend on the situation?
CK: I have different tools in my tool belt and I utilize them when needed during an investigation. For example, I use automatic writing when I’m feeling scattered and overwhelmed. I use psychometry a lot, even if I don’t voice that to the camera. Psychometry helps me read psychic imprints left behind on land or in a home. It’s useful when trying to sense the past. This season, I drew spirit guide drawings for certain clients to provide them with a sense of comfort moving forward. We all have spirit guides watching out for us. I gifted them spirit guide drawings to hang in their homes to remember they are being watched out for and protected.
HJ: Speaking of your artistic talents, are any of your drawings for sale?
CK: This is a great question! I’ve been meaning to sell my art for years and am currently trying to navigate what that looks like. I do plan to commission spirit guide drawings for fans as soon as I’m home long enough to draw them. One of my dreams is to own an art studio one day where I can drink coffee and draw spirits all day long. Stay tuned!

Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, as well as obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.

There’s something I’ve always wondered about: whether anyone could recreate what Amy and Cindy describe using serious computer animation/art to try to give people a sense of what these spirits and entities look like to their eyes.
Of course, that could be nightmare fuel, too.
Now THAT would make a cool show! Having artists put that together for a final reveal at the end. I’d watch that!
There are things they describe that are absolutely hair-raising. And sometimes they say something that totally knocks you for a loop: I can’t forget when Amy told a lady, who was being plagued by a shadow person, that she didn’t have a soul – prt of the reason she was being targeted. I sat there going ???????!!!!!!!
HOLY BLEEP!!!! That’s a hell of a thing to tell someone. What did the lady do? And how do you solve that? Like, you can’t just pick up a soul at the store can you? lol
I love Cindy! I simply cannot wait for these episodes to begin! Do you know when they start, Courtney, and on what channel? I canceled my Discovery+ subscription because of their “housecleaning”!
