HJ Q&A: “How do I get your posts to stop flooding my inbox?”

Three mailboxes covered in snow with ghosts carved into them

Recently I’ve gotten a couple of very nice emails asking about the same thing: “You seem to be publishing more posts lately. I signed up to ‘Never Miss a Thing’ and get notified of new ones because I enjoy what you write, but I don’t want to get notified each time. Is there a way to change that?”

Yes! There is a way to change that.

But first, let me explain my prolific uptick.

I have been writing more now because my travel time has freed up. (Thanks, coronavirus…not!)

Pre-coronavirus I was on the road once or twice a month minimum. It was a good week if I posted three times.

As some have noticed, now that I’m homebound, sometimes I post three times a day. If I was faster, I’d be tempted to post more.

Anyway, since it looks like it’s going to be a while until I can safely get back on the road (I fall in the high-risk category) and resume a more sporadic posting regimen again, I figured I’d address this question since more than one has already asked about it.

If you’re wondering how to change the frequency too, you have a few options.

1. Change your email settings at Manage Subscriptions.

In any New Post Notification email you get, scroll down past the “Comment” and “See all comments” buttons. Directly under the Unsubscribe button, is another sentence that says “Change your email settings at Manage Subscriptions.”

Click the “Manage Subscriptions” and you’ll be taken to a Subscription Management page in WordPress.com. You don’t need to have a WordPress.com account to either subscribe to any blogs or to change the Delivery Frequency.

You have three options to choose from:

  1. Immediate – This is the default setting. I don’t have any control over that, it’s a WordPress.com thing. As soon as I hit publish, an email notifying you of a new post hits your inbox. Keep this as is if you don’t want to change anything.
  2. Daily – You’ll receive a daily digest of any and all posts published on Haunt Jaunts.
  3. Weekly – You’ll receive a weekly digest of any posts published that week.

Pick which one works best for you!

2. MailChimp Weekly Digest Subscription

Before I started using Jetpack for posts-by-email distribution via WordPress.com, I was using MailChimp. I still have that in place for people who initially signed up that way.

If you’d rather get your posts once a week, they automatically are sent every Sunday night. Here’s the signup form for that:

3. Unsubscribe

Obviously this is my least favorite option. I hate to see you go, BUT…I understand.

2020 has shaken everyone up. Maybe what I write about doesn’t appeal to you anymore, or maybe you’re trying to simplify and/or unclutter your life. Maybe you just don’t dig my style anymore.

I get it. I’ll be sad to see you go, but I wish you well and sure do thank you for spending some time with me by way of the Internet.

Plus, unless anything unfortunate happens, I’ll be here if you ever want to stop by or if you decide you miss HJ and want to resume getting posts again.
