Five of the Rarest and Most Valuable Horror Funko Pops
By Lewis Sheller

Funko Pops… Those little figurines you’ve probably walked past a hundred times before, in shops such as Walmart. Chuckling to yourself at the $10, $20, or above, price tags.

“Who’d pay that much for those little pieces of plastic?” you’ve scoffed as you’ve made your way to the videogame section of the store, to purchase the latest $70 game.

But, my dear friend, I’m about to show you just how wrong you’ve been to dismiss these pieces of memorabilia as mere wastes of money. In fact, with the right know-how, you can turn an amazing profit.

Then again, perhaps like me, you’re simply content to collect for your own personal enjoyment. Regardless of your motivations, or where you currently stand on the subject of Pops, I hope this article will both entertain and inform you on the lucrative financial possibilities when it comes to the world of Funko Pops.

1) Golden Hopper (Stranger Things) [SDCC 2018 Exclusive] [#512]

If you’ve ever subscribed to Netflix, chances are you’ve watched the supernatural megahit, Stranger Things.

*If you haven’t, then head on over to your nearest bud with a Netflix account and let them know you’ll be crashing at theirs for the next few days! This heavily 80s-inspired show, itself set within the 80s, took the idea of child protagonists from 80s classics such as The Goonies (1985), and put a supernatural twist on it. Think Monster Squad (1987) meets Dungeons and Dragons! One of the show’s few adult stars is David Harbour, who plays a Police Chief called Hopper.

Whilst a large number of you, I’m sure, are fans of the show, I bet many of you weren’t aware there is a Golden Hopper Funko Pop [#512] currently valued at $6,500!

Before you start rushing to the nearest exit, frantically struggling with your keys in your car’s ignition…“DANG IT, WHY WON’T THIS THING START!”…let me quell your enthusiasm by explaining just how rare this Funko Pop is.

You see, this Pop was gifted to attendees of the Funko Fun Days event at San Diego Comic-Con in 2018. This Pop was created as a limited edition Pop. Only 40 of them exist, worldwide. This $6,500 price tag (their approx. value per Pop), however, does take into account that the Pop has been autographed by David himself, as well as the box and Pop being in mint condition, and the San Diego Comic-Con sticker’s presence.

Still, imagine if it were signed by multiple members of the cast. It would be valued even higher! Even the non-signed version would still net you a cool $3,570 if sold today!

This is a prime example of the right place, right time, for those who were lucky enough to receive one of these golden beauties. In fact, you could say, much like Charlie before his intrepid misadventure into Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory, these San Diego Comic-Con attendees truly did receive a golden ticket that day!

The takeaway from this should be, as an aspiring collector yourself, to always keep an eye out for opportunities. Comic-Cons, for example, are a great place to obtain rarer Pops, as many of those released or gifted here are produced in limited number, increasing their value significantly over time.

2) Boo Berry (GITD) *GITD Chase Variant [#03]

Whilst many horror icons may well be serial killers, this ghostly fellow is more of your atypical cereal killer. I’m talking, of course, about cereal icon Boo Berry. Though technically more of a cereal mascot than a horror icon, there’s an argument to be made that his ghostly appearance would merit his inclusion in one’s horror collection. And, lets face it, I’m sure many of you would argue his cereal is frighteningly tasty.

So with that, he’s on this list! This particular version [#03] is a chase variant glow-in-the-dark (GITD) version of the standard Boo Berry Pop that’s available. This Pop is currently valued at an astonishing $5,570. No autograph required!

3) Bone Daddy (Red Suit) *GITD Chase Variant [#06]

Part of Funko’s Fantastik Plastik line, Bone Daddy is an original character created by Funko and released in 2018. Inspired by the original characters created by toy companies in the 1950s and 60s, he’s essentially a skeleton in a suit.

Whilst the character may be a Funko original, a skeleton is still an iconic image associated with horror, and so to have him appear in a suit is a rather whimsical take on a horror classic. I can’t help but approve.

This bad boy, if purchased nowadays, will set you back a whopping $1,840! Whilst this one may be a tad expensive (putting it mildly) for most folks, I’d highly recommend picking up a Bone Daddy Pop for your collection. Personally, I’d favour the purple variant, which is available for approx. $37.

4) Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) *Unmasked Variant [SDCC 2015 Exclusive] [#202]

With Jason Voorhees being my personal favourite horror movie icon (my 2nd favourite being Michael Myers), I couldn’t resist adding this Pop to the list. Released back in 2015, this Pop has two variants (dependent upon the sticker on the outside of the box).

For those who aren’t collecting the boxes, this Pop may convince you to reconsider when you see how much a single sticker can affect its value. The two variants are as follows: One has a sticker for SDCC 2015, and the other has a sticker for Funko’s 2015 Summer Convention (both located on the outside of the box). If you owned one of these Pops with the Funko Summer Convention sticker, you’d have a Pop currently valued at $630.

However, if you were lucky enough to own the other variant (the one with the SDCC sticker), you’d be the proud owner of a Pop currently worth $1,110. Yes, you heard that right, nearly double the value, simply based on the type of sticker on the box the Pop comes in!

This is why, even if you’ve decided not to collect the boxes, it may still be worth selling the boxes online. Even for lesser valued Pops, collectors are always seeking spare boxes or replacement boxes for those that have become damaged. It’s a good way of making a little extra cashback from something you’d otherwise be throwing away!

5) Universal Monsters (Black & White, 4 Pack). *Metallic Variant

Currently valued at $910, this pack of four Pops may appeal to hardcore horror fans, willing to splash a little extra cash on their Funko Pop collection. The equivalent cost of approximately two home gaming consoles may be a small price to pay when you consider the likelihood that these Pops will continue to skyrocket in value over the next few years.

Firstly, the individual Pops themselves (the iconic Universal Monsters Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, and Gill-man) would be a wonderful addition to any horror Funko Pop collection. These are, after all, the very icons that kickstarted the horror genre in the first place. Thus, no horror Pop collection would be complete without these characters being represented in some manner.

Secondly, these designs were based on the original Funko Pop line for these characters. A line that has since been vaulted (increasing their rarity).

Lastly, their black and white appearance perfectly mimics the look and style of the classic 1930s – 1950s Universal Monster movies, from which these icons originated.

For those who aren’t interested in collecting metallic Pops, or are simply seeking a cheaper alternative (whilst still aspiring to obtain some valuable Pops for their collection), the standard vinyl version of this same four-pack (still black & white) may be of more interest to you (currently valued at $390).

In Conclusion

So, there are my top five rarest and most valuable horror Funko Pops that I personally thought you’d enjoy hearing about. There are many others that I haven’t covered here, and the values of these Pops are always fluctuating, depending on availability and other factors. So, do keep an eye out. You never know when you’ll get the chance to snap up a fantastic future investment!

Remember, general Pop condition, as well as boxes and stickers, affect a Pop’s overrule value. Once a Pop is vaulted, it will usually always increase in value over time (as it’s no longer being produced and thus its rarity increases). Comic-Con exclusives and other limited edition Pops nearly always rise in value, so pick these up straight away when you can (when they’re at their lowest value).

You can use sites like hobbyDB to keep an eye on what Pops are releasing soon (to place pre-orders on sites such as eBay), as well as to keep track of your collection as it continues to grow. eBay is particularly helpful in finding more expensive Pops for sale, second-hand, or for pre-ordering exclusive/limited edition Pops from sellers in the States.

Until next time, keep your wolfsbane near and hold your loved ones tight, for who knows what’s out there, lurking….. in the shadows of the night!

  1. I can see the charm, but I’m not really a collector of things. Well, maybe cats…

  2. Holy hell some of those are expensive, Lewis! And all I can think of is the Beanie Babies craze…will Funko Pops hold their value for years to come or will they eventually lose their appeal and leave a lot of folks out of money too? I had a co-worker spend thousands on Beanie Babies when they were all the rage. She didn’t recoup any of that money when she eventually parted with them…basically for free. So I’m always leery of things like this BUT if you are lucky enough to get a gold of a rare one that someone is willing to pay for? Heck yeah I’d sell it! lol

Or keep, if there was something I was nuts enough about collecting but I sadly don’t have anything like that. But I sure do appreciate you sharing your passion. Thank you!
