Submerged Sites, Drowned Towns and Your Zodiac Sign

Drought, rising seas, increasingly erratic weather patterns —all of these, and more, are climatic change events happening around the world. For this set of mock horoscopes, we’re diving deep into significant environmental events that impacted the course of history. Read on to find out which submerged site or drowned town your sign will explore!

(Please note that, as always, these are mock horoscopes from a creative/literary perspective, and should not be taken as actual commentary on a specific person’s personality or behavior. Also, while I did research the sites as carefully as I could, I have not actually visited any of these sites, so the actual experience may be different in terms of accessibility pertaining to the places in question. If you plan a trip to one, or more, of these sites, please obey all dive site rules, as well as rules and restrictions set by the country/state/locale that are in place to protect their historical treasures—absolutely no looting or defacing the site!)

Virgo (August 23—September 22)

Because this submerged site is representative of where history and mythology intersect, the ruins of Thonis-Heracleion will hold special appeal for the curious Virgo. Virgo will probably already be well-equipped with the academic degrees that’ll allow them to join the excavation team. (Did you really think that Virgo would be there as a tourist on vacation?). They’ll dream of being the one who’ll uncover the final resting place of some long-lost knowledge that’ll be the equivalent of the destroyed Library of Alexandria, though it’s likely they’ll be excited with whatever amazing artifacts they unearth from the depths.

Watching the Tide Come In: Virgos may not be as academically rigorous when it comes to deciding what safe harbor they’ll choose in this time of climate emergency. It’s too much of a real-world intrusion upon their inner world of books and deep thoughts. Still, they have to relocate somewhere, so they’d probably appreciate one of the Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway) that already have clear measures in place to combat climate change, which will give the Virgo plenty of time to think about the global bigger picture and/or the academic-type minutiae of the past.

Libra (September 23—October 22)

Eternally young-at-heart Libra will be drawn to the equally young tourist village of Villa Epecuén in Argentina. The lake that the village was next to was touted as having healing properties (Laguna de Epecuén); however, when a dam broke, the village slowly flooded until it was completely underwater. Whether the waters have healing powers or not, Libra will love walking (or splashing through) the roads of a once-thriving resort town, imagining the intrigues that took place here. Not to mention visiting a place that sometimes appears on the silver screen! After their waterlogged sightseeing, Libra can retire to their own spa resort, the Epecuén Hotel, where they can soak in the heated thermal pool or choose from a wide variety of other self-care options and activities.

Watching the Tide Come In: When they return from their spa retreat, Libra will be hard-pressed to resist a location right by the water, climate change or not. So, in actuality, they may decide to stay in South America, perhaps heading up to Brazil, although if they’re a distance from the coast, Libras will console themselves with the thought that water will always find its way to them.

Scorpio (October 23—November 21)

Part of Baiae, Italy, became submerged due to volcanic activity, and the rest of the town was eventually impacted by disease and other factors. Yet, before its demise, Baiae’s seemingly stuffy classical-history status certainly didn’t prevent it from gaining notoriety as a luxurious resort town with thermal baths much like the aforementioned Villa Epecuén. These ancient Romans and many of the town’s visitors took that luxurious lifestyle one (or many) step(s) further, and embraced a thoroughly decadent existence. At Baiae, purportedly, the party never ended! So, naturally, the unconventional Scorpio will dive deep into this site’s nefarious past as defined by both corruption and over-indulgence.

Watching the Tide Come In: After viewing history through this watery lens, Scorpio may want to jaunt off to a drier locale. While drought, of course, is a serious issue, it’s at least inland, so “Sin City” Las Vegas would be tempting, although, by 2050, its fabled corruption may stem from water shortages rather than greed and avarice. Regardless, it’s a safe bet that Scorpio will hold all the cards, no matter how dire things get for the world.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

While (perhaps) not as spiritual as airy Aquarius, the Sagittarius may still find themselves fascinated by religious or spiritual symbols that persist despite human intervention (or attempted destruction). Or maybe it’s because they are drawn to the suggestion that there’s more beneath the surface than what is visibly apparent. Being a mysterious being themselves in many ways, this questing archer will seek out places that were submerged despite their historical or spiritual significance. Sagittarius’s grand underwater tour may include visits to the drowned town of Sant Romà de Sau in Vilanova de Sau, Spain; the old part of the city of Kalyazin, Russia; or the village of Fabbriche di Careggine in Tuscany, Italy. This fire sign might not even have to risk having its glow extinguished as they’ll probably arrive (in the case of the Sant Romà de Sau and Fabbriche di Careggine) just in time to watch the city rise from the depths, as it does in the time of drought or maintenance.

Watching the Tide Come In: After viewing these sites that could be said to represent society’s tendency to implement measures that are short-term and lack foresight or greater awareness of the ecosystem around them, Sagittarius might be drawn to cities like Phoenix that have taken significant steps to manage water resources more effectively, as well as other options that prepare this desert city for other effects of climate change. Plus, you know, the phoenix mythology of the bird that bursts into flames, and then arises from the ashes.

Capricorn (December 22—January 19)

The Capricorn prides itself on being among the most logical signs of the zodiac. They’ll love nothing more than to visit the Lost Villages in Ontario, Canada—a place that seems to symbolize a victory where logic won out over sentiment—at least in their rational viewpoint of the world, that is. And they may also appreciate the careful planning that went into the relocation process before the villages were flooded. They’ll love musing on what could have been done better as they drift around the few remnants left behind. Capricorn will also probably appreciate how much useable material was retrieved and relocated before these places were flooded, including a certain preservation of the past by the people in charge.

Watching the Tide Come In: This determined sign is not going to be found in some safe zone watching the tide to come in—they’re going to be on the frontlines during this climate emergency. They’ll pack their bag (after they made a careful checklist of what, exactly, they will need for every imaginable contingency) and head off to where they feel their skills will be utilized the most. Some climate change “hot spots” the Capricorn can be found (although they may seem to be everywhere at once!) will be: anywhere on the coast, anywhere near areas of high seismic activity, or anywhere in the world that’s more prone to be affected by drought or food shortages, where they’ll then use their keen logic to solve everyone’s problem in the most efficient way possible.

Aquarius (January 20—February 18)

Mystical-minded Aquarius will use the impetus of the climate emergency to halt their continual mental, emotional, and spiritual journey, heading immediately to the submerged ancient city of Dwarka in India, once thought to only exist in mythology. It’s a fitting place for Aquarius to immerse themselves in (just remember to come up for air, dear Aquarius!) as it’s a significant holy site that’s tied into the divine. In addition to being a deeply sacred site, the city was also notable for its beauty in setting, design, and landscaping. Aquarius, being tapped into multiple dimensions in time and space, can easily reconstruct the age-old glamour and energy of this underwater locale in their mind’s eye. Aquarius may feel that their arrival in this sacred spot has Karmic connotations, and they may feel a strong sense of homecoming and connection to the area.

Watching the Tide Come In: Even above the waters, and in its modern-day incarnation(s), Dwarka remains a site of significant religious and spiritual significance for not only locals but for people all over the world. Again, Aquarians may feel that their Karmic journey has come full cycle, and, upon their arrival in Dwarka, they may feel they’ve reached their next stage of consciousness, perhaps even a higher or almost-final stage in their spiritual journey as manifested in their current physical vessel. In any case, Aquarius will certainly embrace their community, and invest not only their mental and spiritual energy into their new locale, but their physical energy as well, especially as the climate emergency further impacts the region.

Pisces (February 19—March 20)

Pisces will initially be drawn to the submerged ruins discovered in Lake Titicaca, Peru, because of the ancient romance this site carries. The temple(s), sacred mythology, and a power spot that’s under what Pisces already considers a power source (water) will call to Pisces’ siren spirit. Once there, though, the Pisces will be compelled to learn everything they can about their aquatic nonhuman companions they’ll encounter while swimming through these magical ruins. To them, these creatures are not just scientifically classifiable, they’re family. The magic of this ancient civilization may pale against the natural magic of the inhabitants of this underwater locale, and this fishy sign will feel their pain as their own as these life forms face extinction as the lake continues to diminish as a result of this climate emergency.

Watching the Tide Come In: This water sign will do everything they can to protect this rare ecosystem they’ve established a close bond with. Like Capricorn, they’re just as resistant to placidly watching the tide go out on Lake Titicaca (metaphorically, not scientifically, speaking), and the Pisces will take up residence in the most environmentally low-impact way they can while they fight for the unique species that call the lake home.

Aries (March 20—April 19)

Those who have been reading these mock horoscopes for a while are probably not surprised at which underwater location Aries will end up in. Yes, that’s right; this rebellious Ram will relish their dive into the tumultuous and anarchic history of sunken Port Royal in Jamaica, though hopefully they’ve saved their own carousing of the alcoholic kind until after their underwater expedition. (Don’t dive drunk, Aries!) Back on land, Aries will soak up every last bloody drop of this area’s infamous pirate history, before laying siege to nearby Kingston’s nightlife scene. And, unlike the tragic fate of a certain cinematic pirate, there will always be plenty of rum!

Watching the Tide Come In: For an Aries, it may be less about escaping the impact of climate change, and rather about finding a safe harbor to sleep off the aftereffects of their Jamaican debauchery. And they’ll find it by settling down in someplace like Australia, where they can put down roots and do some sustainable farming, while the wildness of the area will still remind them that they haven’t lost touch with their own wild side.

Taurus (April 20—May 20)

So, I’m going to co-opt this particular horoscope just a little to say I actually learned about Atlit Yam via a History Channel DVD set called The Prehistoric Collection that I have! Anyway, from what I remember from the DVD set, Atlit Yam (Israel) was a very early settlement comprised of a community that had just begun to transition from a hunting/gathering lifestyle to more sedentary agricultural one. Scientists believe Atlit Yam was wiped out by a tsunami that was created by a volcanic eruption, and they went looking for evidence of said eruption that would be significant to trigger a tsunami significant enough to drown this settlement. In any case, Taurus, with its dedication to home and family and a more settled existence, immediately reminded me of this community even before I started to do my research into these underwater cities. While the people of Atlit Yam had no warning of the tsunami headed their way, it’s a firm guarantee that Taurus already has a plan (in the event of a weather emergency) that will get them, their family, friends, beloved pets, and all their cherished heirlooms to safety.

Watching the Tide Come In: Although it may seem like Taurus has made an unorthodox choice by settling on Slovakia, the traditional folk culture that still has an active presence in communities across the country will be a strong selling point to this similarly traditional zodiac sign. Plus, Slovakia has access to water sources, higher altitudes, forests, and even a good number of caves to take refuge in if the climate aboveground becomes unlivable, while the local cuisine is deemed suitably simple and sustainable during food shortages, thus ensuring the Taurus can continue to provide for their family.

Gemini (May 21—June 20)

The Yonaguni Monument off the coast of Japan has been a submerged site of some controversy. Some scientists and scholars believe it’s an authentic ancient city, with several people-made structures and roads. However, it’s also largely believed that these distinctive formations are simply naturally occurring rocks or stones. The dual-natured Gemini is perfectly fine with embracing both theories. They can simultaneously believe that this underwater locale is an amazing natural site and they can also imagine the incredible city that’s suggested by the unique shapes. In any case, there’s plenty of other sights to see on this dive trip: sharks, fish, underwater plants, or anything else they encounter. To this unconventional sign, the fact that the site may or may not have been made by an ancient society is almost irrelevant. What matters more is that it’s now a city that belongs to all the underwater creatures and Gemini will probably enjoy watching the more dynamic nonhuman society over one that might have lived there thousands of years ago.

Watching the Tide Come In: Even though Gemini may seem unreliable and all-over-the-place compared to a more grounded sign like Capricorn or Taurus, that doesn’t mean that they don’t assess their situations—in their own unique way, of course! Visiting submerged sites of past civilizations definitely has an impact on this sign, and they’ll feel a certain twin-like kinship with fluid-moving life forms like fish or seaweed. Geminis realize they’ll want to preserve that bond, so they’ll invest in a home that rides lightly upon the water and doesn’t harm their fellow creatures of the air, land, and within the ocean. They’ll find a houseboat, deck it out so that it’s completely eco-friendly and sustainable—complete with a mini greenhouse so they can grow their own fruits and vegetables—and park it on one of the canals in someplace like Amsterdam. Then, when the water levels start to rise, they’ll just float on out into the ocean, completely prepared for whatever climate change throws their way.

Cancer (June 21—July 22)

The excitement and drama around a former trading port will lure the Crab out of its hiding spot and towards the Pavlopetri site in Greece. As this underwater port city is practically intact, Cancer will definitely feel like they’re getting their money’s (and their time’s) worth from their visit. It’s a fairly shallow site, so the sensitive crab can easily retreat to their comfort zone if they feel out of their depth. But the continued discoveries will quickly draw them back to this amazing Greek city. They’ll yearn to know more about Pavlopetri; the stories, daily life, the food, the intrigues and love/hate scenarios, and even what the buildings and the city streets looked like to the residents that once lived here. And, of course, what pushed this once-thriving town underneath the sea. Even as science reveals more and more about this mysterious place, Cancer will be creating their own secret story about the city, and, given the typically reserved nature of this sign, they’ll never reveal their intuitive insights about this location, not even to their nearest and dearest.

Watching the Tide Come In: Once they’re done sightseeing, Cancer will set sail for the most historically (and exotically) luxurious place they can think of—Morocco! They’ll love to imagine their fates dramatically entwined with the artists and writers and celebrities that once lived there, and they’ll relish even more the fascinating culture that exists there today. And, much like their crab namesake, they’ll simply scuttle further inland as the seas begin to encroach upon the African continent.

Leo (July 23—August 22)

Although they’re keen to visit a submerged city that is representative of their majestic personality, Leo will have mixed feelings as they drift around Shi Chéng (Lion City). They’ll feel the pain of this majestic location that’s been languishing under the water, and the only thing that heartens them is that it’s still a popular spot for divers to visit. Leos will try to spend as much time possible exploring this regal city, and imagine themselves in stately residence as one of the more powerful and well-respected citizens of this ancient place. Even as this sign pays its respects and bestows a final regal wave, Leos will secretly be glad to return to the surface. Water isn’t always among a zodiacal lion’s favorite element, after all. And there are plenty of regal locations to explore aboveground throughout the Zhejiang Province.

Watching the Tide Come In: While the Leo may be nervously watching the encroaching tide, they won’t be able to resist a location that’s also represented by a lion. Scotland is both regal and fierce, much like a Leo. They’ll snap up the castle of their dreams, and they’ll live out the end of the world, imagining themselves as a powerful monarch of their own sprawling estate. Which, luckily, will be large enough to contain its own valuable mini-ecosystem. Not to mention a vegetable patch, a topiary, a showy rose garden, and plenty of sheep, of course!
