There’s a reason A Haunting in Venice is one of the most anticipated movies this Fall. But Fandango shared an exclusive clip that demonstrates why it’s also the most anticipated horror movie this year.
“I must tell you, madam, I have been all my life uncharmed by your kind,” Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) says to psychic medium Mrs. Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh) as they walk up a staircase with Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey).
“My kind?” she asks.
“Opportunists who prey on the vulnerable.”
“You don’t believe in the soul’s endurance after death.”
“I have lost my faith,” Poirot says.
“How sad for you,” Mrs. Reynolds almost whispers. (She sounds sad about it but doesn’t look particularly solemn about his lost faith.)
“Yes, it is most sad,” Poirot agrees in that dismissive way he often employs. “The truth is sad.”
The clip cuts to a very elaborate white chandelier and lingers on it before cutting back to the trio.
“Please understand, madam,” Poirot implores Mrs. Reynolds. “I would welcome with open arms any honest sign of devil or demon or ghost. For if there is a ghost, there is a soul. If there is a soul, there is a god who made it. And if we have God, then we have everything. Meaning, order, justice. But I have seen too much of the world. Countless crimes. Two wars. The bitter evil of human indifference, and I conclude, no. No God, no ghosts, with respect no mediums who can speak to them…”
His rant is interrupted by something very definitive. But since I don’t want to spoil the clip, I’ll just leave it at that.
However, put it this way: the first time I saw it, it made me jump. As I was re-watching to transcribe for this post, even knowing it was coming, it startled me again. (Partly because I was once again so mesmerized by Branagh’s performance.)
Luckily there’s a perfectly timed moment of levity to break the tension.
“You were saying?” Mrs. Reynolds asks.
If this is just a taste of what we can expect, we’re in for a treat with A Haunting in Venice.

Agreed. I’ve enjoyed the other two in this series with Kenneth Branagh as Poirot, but this one looks like third time may be the charm and be the best yet. lol
The bonus with this one is that, unlike the first two, I haven’t seen any version of it, so it will be a completely new viewing experience.
OMG you often do this, Maria, but what an excellent point! I hadn’t even thought of that. Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile both were remakes but this truly IS something fresh and new. AHHHH!!! Now you’ve got my excitement even higher!!!!
