The second Friday the 13th in 2020 happens in November, and it could get freaky. (Well, it’s got its work cut out for it, because let’s face it. All of 2020 has been pretty freaky, no Friday the 13th needed, right?)
However, Freaky is a new horror-comedy releasing Friday, November 13. It’s basically a rehashing of Freaky Friday except this isn’t another Disney resurrection. This one comes from Blumhouse Productions, the director of Happy Death Day, and stars Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton.
There’s still an adult and a teen swapping bodies, but not a mother and daughter. This time it’s a serial killer and a high school senior.
The Storyline
I copied the below from Freaky‘s YouTube trailer:
Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler (Newton, Blockers and HBO’s Big Little Lies) is just trying to survive the bloodthirsty halls of Blissfield High and the cruelty of the popular crowd. But when she becomes the newest target of The Butcher (Vaughn), her town’s infamous serial killer, her senior year becomes the least of her worries.
When The Butcher’s mystical ancient dagger causes him and Millie to wake up in each other’s bodies, Millie learns that she has just 24 hours to get her body back before the switch becomes permanent and she’s trapped in the form of a middle-aged maniac forever. The only problem is she now looks like a towering psychopath who’s the target of a city-wide manhunt while The Butcher looks like her and has brought his appetite for carnage to Homecoming.
The Cast
Freaky also stars Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) as the “ultra-woke” Nyla, Misha Osherovich (The Goldfinch) as the “ultra-fabulous” Joshua, Uriah Shelton (Enter the Warriors Gate) as her crush Booker, along with Alan Ruck (HBO’s Succession), Katie Finneran (TV’s Why Women Kill) and Dana Drori (Hulu’s High Fidelity).

Freaky comes “from the deliciously debased mind” of writer-director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, the Paranormal Activity franchise).
It’s written by Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy (Fox’s Bordertown).
Trailer Comments
I’m really hoping the trailer hasn’t given up the whole movie. Or at least the best parts of the movie. You know what I mean, right? You know those movies where after you’ve seen them, you feel like you could’ve been just as satisfied sticking to the trailer.
Hopefully, the movie still has some laughs in store. Certain dialogue in the trailer, however, prompted many people (myself included) to refer to it to in their YouTube comments. The top three being:
- “You’re black. I’m gay. We are so dead.”
- “Great. We’re going to get killed by Murder Barbie.” (My personal fave.)
- “Boys don’t really notice me.” As spoken by Millie. SO many comments about how it’s laughable Newton is trying to be passed off as an unnoticeable nobody when no matter what she’s always a knockout.
The other comment that was quite common was how most people felt this was more a horror version of The Hot Chick instead of Freaky Friday. I hadn’t drawn that conclusion before reading that, but now that I see it, I can’t unsee it. A lot of people didn’t like The Hot Chick, and yes, it’s formulaic and silly, but I also thought it was pretty fun. I’m hoping Freaky will be too.
Or, as another Dylan Fulk’s YouTube comment so brilliantly put it: “Vince Vaughn acting like a teenage girl. Sold.”

I didn’t either. I thought this year was one with only one. I forgot there had been one in March. Probably because that was right when all the lockdown stuff started happening. Oh, and it was right around the time of the tornadoes here.
