The Queen Mary Cancels Dark Harbor Event Amid Coronavirus

First Eastern State Penitentiary’s Terror Behind the Walls, now the Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor. Another mega Halloween attraction has announced that it’s canceling its 2020 season.

The Queen Mary said, “Scare you all next year,” in a post on their Facebook page.

According to a Los Angeles Times article about the cancelation, upwards of 140,000 guests usually attend Dark Harbor festivities during the event’s season, which runs September through November.

“To make Dark Harbor the successful event that it is, our partners undertake months of preparation and hard work. We do not believe that California will meet the requirements to begin Phase 4 of reopening by September, which allows events and large gatherings to take place, and we believe other 2020 large events will soon be announcing cancellations,” said a statement from Urban Commons, the company that manages the Queen Mary.

The Los Angeles Times article also said the Queen Mary had been closed since May 6, 2020, which surprised me. I would’ve thought it had closed much earlier like the Winchester Mystery House and other popular tourist destinations had.

However, I wasn’t thinking about how the Queen mary is also a hotel in addition to a tourist destination.  They may have ceased offering general admission and guided tours but still allowed guests to check-in. Not now. They’re temporarily closed altogether.

Crap.

I feared this might happen. I actually didn’t see how it couldn’t, especially when cases continue to climb and some places are reversing opening decisions, California being one of them.

Plus, even though it’s not an operating sailing ship, it still is a ship and comprised primarily of enclosed places. Especially where Dark Harbor takes place. Very close quarters that are not conducive to social distancing at all.

They really had no other choice, but it sure is a bummer. Coronavirus be GONE already!

  1. I guess it was to be expected. I’m sure a lot of people are disappointed and those whose jobs are affected I know are chompin’ at the bit to get back to work.

I think you’re right. To be expected but still so disappointing. And YES! People whose livelihoods have been impacted are definitely ready for business to return to normal –or a new normal. Or just some kind of something that lets them work!
