Destination Fear S3 Interview: Dakota’s Ducks, Drama, Scares and More!

Destination Fear team Tanner Wiseman, Chelsea Laden, Dakota Laden and Alex Schroeder
Paranormal explorers (l to r) Tanner Wiseman, Chelsea Laden, Dakota Laden and Alex Schroeder give fans an exclusive sneak peek of the new season in the team’s first-ever Comic-Con@Home panel.

Quack, quack! Dakota’s ducks were among the fun things I asked Dakota Laden, Tanner Wiseman, and Alex Schroeder about Destination Fear season 3. But we also chatted about scariest moments (the scariest one this season wasn’t paranormal!) and Shark Week. (Of all things!)

I didn’t have a chance to ask if others had questions ahead of the interview like I normally do, so I did something a little different this go around. I scoured Twitter for questions from their diehard fans. I came up with great ones from @Kim_Hunt, @Crazymusiclover, and @MadisonCummins0.

But of course I had a lot of my own too. Here are a few of the ones I had time to ask. I’ve embedded the episode below for your listening pleasure. You can also find it wherever you get your podcasts from.

But for now, let’s start with those ducks!

1. What’s up with Dakota’s ducks? Are they in every episode and how long have they been doing that?

Did you know about this? Dakota’s ducks was something I learned about during my Twitter question search. Everyone was going cuckoo crazy trying to find the ducks in the first episode of the Destination Fear season 3 premiere.

At the risk of my fan status being revoked, I had to ask about it because it was all new to me. Granted, I haven’t seen all of their episodes anyway, so that’s probably grounds for my fan status to be revoked too. But I am a huge fan of theirs in general because I have yet to talk with nicer stars.

Anyway, Dakota said there would be a least one duck in every episode again in season 3. He also gave some hints about how many there were in past seasons and which seasons so far have been the most difficult to find them all. (Hint: Season 1 is the trickiest!)

2. Who drives the RV?

This one was from @Kim_Hunt, who had Tweeted that every time she watches she wonders who’s driving. I thought that was a great question, and they actually thought it was a fun one too.

The answer is a union driver.

3. How long does it take to research each haunted location?

@Crazymusiclover wanted to know this one. How much behind-the-scenes work does go into every episode? This was another great question. It’s at least one to weeks of background research per location. Not counting all the interviews they end up doing with owners, staff, historians, etc. Or all of the editing and such!

4. Would they be down to letting fans pick a location for them?

Absolutely! They’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while actually. The trick is how would the location be revealed to them? Who should they give control to? Once they figure that out, they may run a location-picking contest or something.

But they were also quick to point out they each have asked fans on Twitter where would they like to see Destination Fear explore and have actually gotten some leads that way.

5. What’s up with the drama this season? Is there more than usual? Is everything okay with them?

There were several episode descriptions this season that caught my eye because it seemed like there were some interpersonal issues, which isn’t normal for them. I read these two in particular to them:

  • Ep 4: Dakota unveils a fear experiment so diabolical that the team is forced to decide whether to part ways or to continue on this road trip from hell together.
  • Ep 5: Fed up with Tanner’s and Dakota’s experiments, Chelsea picks a revenge location unlike any other. The dark, untapped energy of this Pennsylvania poorhouse is overwhelming, and it forces the team to make a stunning decision to save their sanity.

I wanted to know if everything was okay or if it was a little more intense this season than in one’s past. They all agreed there was a little more drama than usual, but Dakota assured me they’re all fine. As Tanner and Alex put it, they know how to push each other’s buttons and may get mad for a bit, but at the end of the day, they’re family. They also know how to makeup and there’s no one else they’d rather do any of this with.

6. Will we see them exploring more fun pre-investigation activities in this season’s episodes like they did with the hot air balloon in the Waverly episode?

Definitely! Every episode they do something. Dakota said it’s a great way to bond and release stress. So, yes. Every episode this season we’ll see them doing something fun before they prepared to get scared at the chosen location.

7. How does it feel to have some fans say that they now like Destination Fear more than Ghost Adventures, and congratulate Dakota for surpassing his mentor?

I wish I had noted the person who had Tweeted this. But they took it as a huge compliment.

8. What was the scariest location for them this season?

It was different for all of them, and I actually can’t reveal Dakota’s answer yet. I accidentally extracted info I wasn’t supposed to know just yet. But as soon as I get the go-ahead to release it, I will

9. Any news on Destination Fear season 4 yet?

Not yet. But just like they’re fans, they have their fingers crossed Destination Fear will get renewed for a season 4.

10. Would they rather return to one of their scariest locations or participate in a Shark Week special?

Shark Week was still on my mind so I was curious how they’d answer this. They all agreed a Shark Week special would be terrifying, but they’d hands down be game to do something like that instead of revisiting a location they’d already been to.

  1. Haha, no, I haven’t found all of Dakota’s ducks.:-) I imagine there is a LOT of research that goes into investigating a location, but one to two weeks is even more than I expected.

  2. Author

And they even have a team to help do it. I thought that was pretty interesting how long it takes them.
