July 2016 Caption This Contest

Sincerest apologies for the delay in posting this month’s contest. I meant to schedule it to post in my absence while I was on a two-week jaunt in Alaska, but alas…

I didn’t get that far before we left. I knew I was going to have limited Internet access, so I left my laptop at home. That way I could get an actual vacation and be ready to hit it hard and be fresh for Halloween season, which is fast approaching!

I’m back now so without further ado, let’s get this month’s contest started! Here’s all the details you’ll need:

How to Play

  1. Look at the photo below.
  2. Use the comment section to caption it.
  3. Be sure to let us know what prize you’d like if you win. (Yes! There are not only prizes, but you get to pick which one appeals to you most!)
  4. Newsletter subscribers: be sure to identify yourself. (If you’re not one, read on to find out why you might like to become one.)

Prizes

  1. $10 Amazon card
  2. $10 Starbucks card
  3. $15 iTunes card
  4. $15 Target card

How to Double Your Prize

Newsletter subscribers will be allowed to choose two prizes. If their caption is chosen, they’ll get both!

That means they have a chance to put between $20-$30 extra spending money in their pockets.

Not a subscriber? Become one here. (Super fast and easy. You just need to submit your email address.)

Rules

  1. Open to U.S. residents only. (Sorry out-of-country readers!)
  2. If two or more caption submissions are very similar, we’ll draw names from the Boo Bucket to determine a winner.
  3. Multiple entries accepted. (If you’re gifted enough to come up with more than one caption, feel free to submit them. Just be sure we know they’re distinct entries and not a giant run-on one.)
  4. Newsletter Subscribers: You can pick two of the same card, or two different ones. Entirely up to you.

FAQs

Are multiple submissions accepted?

Yes. See #3 above under Rules.

Does my caption have to be a quote?

Nope. You can give the photo a title, write a poem, make it a quote as if someone’s saying something, write a flash story…anything goes. Whatever the photo inspires from you, we’ll take!

Ready?

Go!

  1. Jim looked at his wife and tried to console her. Everything seemed to come out wrong, no matter what words he uttered.
Sally was so distraught at being the last couple on earth that she couldn’t stop sobbing. No words would come. Just the tears.
“Come on, Sally. It’s not that bad. Think of it, no neighbors to borrow your stuff and never return it. Nobody to be in your business. Nobody to hurt you like where we were.”
“You just” sobbing “don’t get it,” sobbed Sally. “I have no one left to talk to. No one to confide in.”
    “What? You have me.”
“Yes, but,” sobbed Sally, “it’s not the same. You aren’t a woman and don’t like talking about the things women do. You are mainly around to do things that I can’t not be a companion.”
“I thought we were companions. We’ve been married almost 40 years.”
Sally sighed. “Yeah about that ….”

Submitted by Elysabeth Eldering, author of the Kelly Watson YA paranormal mystery series
    (newsletter subscriber)
    choice of gift cards – 1) $15 Target; 2) $10 amazon

  2. “We’ve got the best seats in the house to the Iraqi camel races and you’re complaining?”

  3. Gee honey, this Twilight Zone theme park is awesome! This weird beach looks and feels real! Do you think we can really get back to our real life? Ha! Ha! I’m just joking you know…..well I hope.
    Amazon gift card.

  4. Aw crud. You guys just love making picking a winner hard on me, don’t you?

Okay, there were some very clever entries again this month. Good job on the flash story, Elysabeth. You took over for Glen this month on that, who decided to go shorter this time, but was, as usual, punchy with his words.

Donna, John, Cindy, Marvin and Patricia all integrated funny beach concepts into their entries.

Pamela, Lee and Teresa jaunted down the spacey path with their entries. In a very fun way, though. (And funny story about Teresa’s entry. I saw it in my behind-the-scenes dashboard at first, but only the “Greetings from Jakku” part. I sighed and at first thought it was spam, until I realized what post it had been left on. Then I cracked up, because how clever to make a Star Wars reference out of it!)

Ultimately the 3 that tickled me the most were: Donna, Pamela and Deborah’s. However, I’m awarding First Place to Deborah’s Apocalypse entry because if that photo was entered in a photo competition with that caption I think it would have to win something. Like Best Laugh Provoker. Or something.

So good job everyone. Thanks for playing. August 2016’s contest has been posted. Good luck if you enter that too. And congrats to Deborah. I’ll be in touch.
