Review: Danny’s Doomsday

If you have Amazon Prime and enjoy creature feature meets end-of-the-world meets coming-of-age, Danny’s Doomsday is a fun one to consider watching.

I say “consider” because it’s foreign. It has subtitles. But if you don’t mind them, or understand Danish, you’ll be golden!

Genre?

After watching Danny’s Doomsday, I was curious to learn more so I looked it up on IMBD. That’s when the genres it’s listed as caught my eye:

• Adventure
• Family
• Romance
• Thriller

Huh? I can see the Adventure and Thriller, but the other two? There is a little romance…but I mean little. Truly kid stuff, first crush kind of material.

I looked up the Korean monster movie, The Host, to see what genre(s) it was classified as, because Danny’s Doomsday reminded me of that to some extent. The Host‘s genres fit better: Action, Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi.

Side note: Another fun thing I learned from IMDB was that the movie William (the little brother) is watching before the mutants attack was Reptilicus, Denmark’s first monster movie. (But it must be a stinker because there’s a Mystery Science Theater 3000: Reptilicus episode.)

The Plot

It’s pretty simple really: global warming causes a dangerous mutation which creates a monster that starts preying on humans as food, threatening civilization as we know it.

Danny and his brother are thrust into the chaos –from the safety of their own home.

But Life is more than just sudden sentinel events, isn’t it? We all have our ups and downs, accomplishments and challenges woven into every day.

Such is the case with Danny and his younger brother William.

Danny is your average quiet, studious, keep his nose clean teenager. William is an outcast, loner, troublemaker who gets picked on. And rather unpleasantly, all while his big brother sits by and doesn’t take up for him out of fear.

But will that change when the mutant monsters come along?

Rating

I love foreign movies, especially horror ones. It’s fun to see other interpretations of the genre, and to get a glimpse into another culture.

Danny’s Doomsday is a little bit campy, a little bit serious, with a couple of jump scares thrown in. It’s not quite as good as The Host (the Korean horror movie I mentioned above; not the other one about aliens), but it’s got a lot of heart and was fun to watch. Even though the ending was predictable, how they ended up handling the mutants was pretty novel.

I give it three and a half out of five skulls.
