At first blush, Austin, Texas, may seem like a peculiar place for Lugosi’s Vampire Museum to open. However, Austin is sort of evolving into a vampire hub. What they lack in Dracula-inspired lore, they make up for with what many might consider his familiars: bats. Because of the colony of Mexican Free-tailed bats that claimed one of its downtown bridges as a roosting habitat, Austin has adopted the moniker Bat City.
Is that why Austin hosts a Nosferatu Festival? I don’t know, but I know I’ve listed that and the Austin Witchfest on the Paracons & Horror Fests page.
I think that’s maybe why the “coming soon” announcement about Lugosi’s Vampire Museum on The Glass Coffin’s Instagram caught my eye. It was something else spooky and vampire in Austin.
They didn’t state when the museum was opening, but they did include a short video giving a little sneak peek.

I reached out to inquire for further details, and to ask for permission to use the photo of the exterior of The Glass Coffin Vampire Parlour in this post. To my delight, Joey Slayne, the owner, wrote back, granting permission to use the photo. As far as the museum’s opening, he said, “hoping sometime in August.”
I checked today to see if there had been any further announcements. Not yet. But with Spooky Season right around the corner, I’m willing to bet it won’t be much longer.
But I realize I now have even more questions for Slayne about Lugosi’s Vampire Museum. What will be in it? Will it be free to check it out during a visit to the Parlour, or is there a separate entrance fee? And what about the building housing the Parlour? What’s its story? Any ghosts?
Austin is a super groovy city. I may have to make another trip there to answer my questions in person. For now, let’s check out what the Glass Coffin is all about.
