In recent years, Hulu’s showcased a knack for making fun mystery series, haven’t they? We’re talking limited series like Nine Perfect Strangers and The Clearing to recurring series like The Hardy Boys and Only Murders in the Building. It’s unclear if one of their newest releases, Death and Other Details, will be limited or come back for a second season. It definitely has the character structure to make for a series.
This first season (and maybe only, we’ll see) follows Imogene Scott (played by Violett Beane) as she tries to clear her name. As Hulu put it, she “finds herself in the wrong place/wrong time (okay, it was kinda her fault) and becomes the prime suspect in a locked room murder mystery.”
To find the killer and “prove her innocence, she must partner with a man she despises, Rufus Cotesworth, the world’s greatest detective.” (Mandy Patinkin plays Cotesworth.)
It’s a great cast and reminds me of old-school murder mysteries à la Agatha Christie. But the setting is what I like best, which is on a “lavishly restored Mediterranean ocean liner.” Naturally. Because while it’s modern in every other way, it is “set amidst the glamor of the global elite.” And what screams “elite” more than Art Deco?
Well, a lot of things. It’s an interesting choice, for sure. They could’ve just as easily set it on some ultra-luxurious modern yacht, not one with Art Deco flair. But maybe it’s a case of what’s old is new again?
I don’t know, but some scenes had me wondering where Death and Other Details was filmed. Especially ones featuring Imogene and Cotesworth conversing in the Promenade.
Was Death and Other Details filmed on the Queen Mary?
The second I saw the scene, I was like, “That’s The Queen Mary! It has to be. Right?”
Some of the staterooms, which I know have been refurbed since our visit, also looked familiar. However, in the series, most are suites and not the least expensive, bare-bones option we picked for our one-night stay.
I finally got around to looking it up, and sure enough. According to LatLong.net, “interior scenes of the ship were filmed at The Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.”
Thought so.
It was also filmed in Vancouver and Surrey, both of which are in British Columbia, Canada.

I recognized Pepperdine University when my daughter and I were watching a YA show called Zoey 101. Cute show, beautiful location!
