When I wrote about the Utah monolith and the appearance of a second one in Romania, I wondered where one might show up next. We didn’t have to wait long for the answer, did we? A California monolith was found on Wednesday, December 2, on a trail in Atascadero.
Sadly, like the Utah monolith, a group of men decided to take it upon themselves to remove it.
The California Monolith
Atascadero is located between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The monolith appeared on the pinnacle of the Pine Mountain trail in Stadium Park.
The three-sided monolith was very similar to the Utah one. It stood about the same height and even had the same type of rivet holes, judging from the pictures posted to social media by those who were lucky enough to get to see it before it was destroyed.
The Destroyers
A group of men claimed to have come from five hours south of Atascadero to tear down the California monolith.
Vice reported that they live-streamed their vandalism to a DLive account. The video has since been removed, but the men shouted “Christ is King” and “America First,” with one saying “Christ is king in this country. We don’t want illegal aliens from Mexico or outer space. So let’s tear this bitch down.”
Wow. Really?
They decided to put up a wooden cross instead, but that didn’t last long either. People were not happy they took it upon themselves to remove the monolith.
Mourning the Monolith’s Removal
The men who removed the Utah monolith claimed to do it because they were concerned over the integrity of the public lands. Or so they say. Some feel they did it for a publicity stunt.
It likely would’ve been removed by authorities anyway, though. They were concerned for both the land’s safety but also for that of visitors.
However, even though the California monolith showed up in a park, it wasn’t quite as remote. And the people of Atascadero seemed to embrace the monolith’s mysterious appearance and welcome the novelty of it. They don’t condone the monolith’s removal. At all.
In fact, the AP reported that police were reviewing the video the vandals posted. No word yet on whether charges would be filed or not if they find who did it. However, that does seem to be a possibility that might be explored, which is one that hasn’t been addressed in the Utah monolith’s removal.
Will there be a fourth monolith?
Utah, Romania, California…will a fourth monolith show up somewhere?
Time will tell.
Who’s making the monoliths?
Will we ever find out who’s putting them up?
Or maybe it’s better not to know. Safer for the creator or creators, judging by the destructive nature of some anti-monolith factions.

I would like the monoliths to remain. It seems like a harmless thing, and it gives us all something to talk about other than all the bad things from 2020. JMO. YMMV.
