Unwelcome: A New Irish Folk Horror Movie for St. Patrick’s Day

Unwelcome movie poster

The trailer for Unwelcome, a forthcoming creature feature, starts off innocently enough. So much so you might even mistake it for a romance or some other tamer genre.

A couple inherits a country home that needs a little bit of work. But it isn’t long before there are signs you’re in horror movie territory. The first clue is one of the creepy workmen. He’s watching the new homeowners just a little too intently.

Then comes the peppy woman with a sing-song smile showing the couple around their new house. She leads them outside, explaining, “There is one thing I need to show you, and it’s a little bit peculiar,” followed by a nervous little giggle. “Every evening before sunset, she’d leave a blood offering here.”

Say what? That’s more than a little bit peculiar, lady!

Which is not an unreasonable reaction and the same one the expectant wife has when she asks, “Sorry. Did you say blood?”

Yep. For the Redcaps. Whatever those may be. We get a little peek at them during the trailer. It brought to mind shades of Leprechaun (1993), which may be timely since Unwelcome releases in time for St. Patrick’s Day. It’ll be in select theaters on March 10 and digital on March 14.

All I know is if it’s half as good as the trailer, Unwelcome is going to be a welcome addition to the horror genre. Let’s take a closer look.

Unwelcome Synopsis

A couple escapes their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to hear stories of mysterious beings who live in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. As warned by their new neighbors, in Irish lore the Redcaps will come when called to help souls in dire need of rescue, but it’s crucial to remember that there is always a dear price to pay for their aid.
