Travel Tech: The Beauty of Camera Cases

I had bought a new camera, a Sony Cybershot with 7x optical zoom, last August before we departed on our 10 day Canada/New England cruise. I loved my little Canon but the lens had been acting up. (Sometimes it was getting stuck upon start up which caused the camera not to come on.) If it failed me entirely I wanted to be sure to have a back up.

I also ended up buying a little camera case for the Sony. I use a small purse when we travel that has an inside pocket I pop my Canon in. Since I planned on using it as a first choice, but wanted the Sony on hand as back up, I figured I needed something to tote it around in.

So I bought a cheap little Lowepro camera case.

My Lowepro is taking all the abuse I can give it

When I say “cheap” I’m referring only to price. (And myself. It was under $10, which is about all I was willing to pay. At that time I didn’t understand the beauty of camera cases.)

At any rate, it worked out great. And, as I quickly discovered, it carried more than just my new camera. I could tuck our room cards into the front flap and have them for easy, fast access. I could also stash some easy to get to cash in the zip pocket on the outside of the front flap. Came in very handy!

For the cruise we just took to the Caribbean I had bought another camera. After researching waterproof digital cameras, I decided upon the Kodak PlaySport. I hadn’t thought about getting a new camera case for it, though. Since I ended up using the Sony most of the time this trip, I’d just leave the Canon in our stateroom and I’d pop the PlaySport into my purse.

But I ended up seeing that if I worked it right, I could almost use the PlaySport during some jaunts as both the primary camera and camcorder because it takes pictures as well as video.

I also realized that I could consolidate things to carry if I got a camera case with just a smidge more room. Having something that could store room and credit cards, cash, my inhaler, as well as the camera…wow! I could really lighten my load!

So I decided on a Sony camera case.

Still small, but a little more room than my other case

It’s still small like the Lowepro, wasn’t much more price-wise, but it has two zip pockets. One big for the camera, one smaller with slats for cards and enough room for my inhaler, then the front zip for cash. Sweet!

The only thing I got to thinking it wouldn’t have room for is my little notebook and pen. I’m forever joting down notes. So…in all likelihood I’ll still end up carrying my purse in addition to my camera cases. But there is room in the camera storage part of the Sony case. If I find a smaller notepad and mini pen I could still store note taking materials in there.

Or, I could always use the recording function to dictate notes to myself. But sometimes people are talking when ideas strike, so…that wouldn’t always work.

Oh well. I’ll figure it out. For now, I’m super satisfied with my camera cases.
