Some Haunting Mardi Gras Pictures and Videos

Balcony festooned in Mardi Gras finery

Happy Mardi Gras!

I never thought I’d find myself in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, but I didn’t realize the celebration lasts for a few weeks before, all the way to, Fat Tuesday. It was already in full swing when we were there in the latter half of February.

Which was great! It was very neat seeing the French Quarter all decked out in its Mardi Gras best.

I of course took a lot of pictures and video. In case you’ve never been but were curious about it, or have been but didn’t get to go this year, I hope you’ll enjoy celebrating a bit of Mardi Gras with me here this way.

I was SOOOO tempted to steal this beautiful mask hanging on a shop door. (But I didn't. I behaved.)

VIDEO

The first clip shows the sight we stumbled upon right as we headed out to Bourbon Street the night we were there. There was actually a band playing ragtime as they marched along with the crowd following them, but I instead caught the music from the bar we were next to. Which actually goes with the video much better! (But it also gives you a taste and flavor of the Mardi Gras fun.)

This second video is a compilation of clips I pieced together of two drunk women riding certain things on Bourbon Street. In one case a pole, in another a saddle. (I can’t very well celebrate Fat Tuesday without some kind of funny drunkeness, can I? I’m just always so happy when I have my camera handy to catch people making fools of themselves and me laugh so I can share it with others.)

  1. I really miss New Orleans. It is one of my favorite cities. I almost went to graduate school there and I often think I should have. I haven’t been there since I had babies. I love the pics. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

WOW! What a place that would’ve been to go to school! It had been years since I’d been there myself, and I was young when I went so I didn’t appreciate it as much as I did this time. (Oh, and I’ll have more pics coming. It’s not the kind of place you can cover all in one visit.)

Oh wow, Andy, sounds like you had a GREAT weekend! Good weather, a St. Pat’s parade, AND BBQ! YUMMMMMM!!!!!!!!! I’ll ask my friends who live near St. Louis if they know about those restaurants yet. They’re always looking for new places to eat. THX for the info.

  7. I’ve never been to “Nawlins” myself (that IS how they say it, right?) and didn’t know about Mardi Gras being celebrated in advance. Looks like a good time, too.
I’m adding that “Wicked Orleans ” store (from your picture) right now to my personal New Orleans GoogleMap, which already has the cemeteries and such on it. I’ll get there some day! Thanks for the pics and info.

Hi trickortreat! It’s always good to see a comment from you! And I learned something new I’m just gonna have to check out: adding places to GoogleMaps. I didn’t know you could do that! How cool! And it’s kind of neat someplace I wrote about sparked you to add it to your map. How cool! (OH, and yep, it’s ‘Nawlins. You’re set. You already speak the language and everything! 😉
