Review: A Christmas Horror Story

‘Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even Krampus or the elves.

Wrong!

Well, okay, I am writing this post with one week to go until Christmas, but Krampus and elves –and so much more!– are definitely stirring in A Christmas Horror Story.

If it was released in theaters, I missed it. If it went straight to DVD, I missed it. The first I heard any buzz about it at all was on Instagram and Twitter within the last week. Oh, and maybe Netflix sent me an email like they do saying they had a movie suggestion I might like.

I put it in my queue and ended up watching this past weekend when the cold my husband decided to share with me left me couch-bound.

It didn’t get great ratings on IMDB. (5.7)

Normally I feel IMDB’s ratings are a pretty close indicator of my viewing preferences. But there are always exceptions. The one that comes to mind is Drag Me To Hell. It clocked in with a 6.6 on IMDB. Not in my book. It’s a solid 1. I hated that movie. Although in fairness, I didn’t even watch the whole thing. I hated the 10 minutes I watched of it before I turned it off in total disgust.

I’m not sure I’d go as high as a 7 out of 10 for A Christmas Horror Story, but I feel it’s better than 5.7. 6.8 sounds fair. For what it was, it was pretty enjoyable.

And what was it?

A Horror Anthology

Interwoven stories that take place on Christmas Eve, as told by one festive radio host: A family brings home more than a Christmas tree, a student documentary becomes a living nightmare, a Christmas spirit terrorizes, Santa slays evil.

There are four stories being told simultaneously. The blurb calls it “interwoven” but that’s a little deceptive.

For the most part, they’re four separate stories. The thing tying them all together is Dangerous Dan, a radio DJ working on Christmas Eve (played by William Shatner).

However, there’s a bit of a twist with the Santa fighting zombie elves story line that does relate directly to Dangerous Dan. Not going to give away any spoilers, though, so move along. Nothing to see here.

Rating

“Didn’t you already rate it?” you might be wondering.

Fair. I did talk about what kind of IMDB rating I would’ve given it if I was in charge of such things. But I’m not, and that’s not how I rate things around here anyway when I get around to rating things at all.

Skellie and I prefer the skulls method. I’d give A Christmas Horror Story 3.5 out of 5 skulls. It’s not the best horror movie ever, but I thought it was a fun seasonal offering.

And can I just say, “Who knew Krampus could be so sexy?” What a hunk. Found myself crushing on him a little during his scenes.
