Mourning the Loss of the Canada/New England Vacation Pictures

I’m devastated. Last night one of my friends I play volleyball with confirmed something I had started to fear over the weekend: even if the recovery disk gets my crashed computer restarted, it’ll do so with a clean slate. Meaning, anything I didn’t backup will be wiped out.

DREADED REALIZATION

The guys at Best Buy, both the sales reps and the Geek Squad agents, had explained that to me. At the time it didn’t sink in. I think my brain was trying to protect me so it absorbed the information but didn’t disseminate it. It knew I was having enough trouble coping with the idea of a crashed computer at the start of the blog party. That was bad enough.

But now it’s sunk in and my heart is shattered. I had backed up my Word documents not too long before the crash. I missed a few things from the couple of days right before, but nothing too crucial.

However, the last time I tried to put my pics on the flash drive they didn’t take. Worse, I had erased them to make more room for the videos, because I was planning on making DVDs by year of my pictures and backing them up that way. I didn’t get to it in time.

GONE, BABY, GONE, IT’S ALL GONE…

So now there are a ton of pics that are just gone. Including all of our pictures and videos from our Canada/New England cruise.

It makes me sick to my stomach. The pics I’m most regretting not backing up are:

• Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Forest. The scenery there was outstanding. I got some great shots of the coastline and Thunder Hole. And one of me with my plate of Maine lobster! Oh, I was so happy to be dining in Maine on lobster!
• The Citadel in Halifax. What a neat fort. I got some great video of them firing the cannon at noon. They also promote their ghosts there. You could feel them. It was a neat haunt jaunt. Kicking myself I don’t have those pics anymore.
• The Anne of Green Gables house on Prince Edward Island.I want to throw up thinking I don’t have a copy of these for a keepsake now. I know it’s just a hosuse they built based on a fictional story, but I relate to Anne. I’d always wanted to go to Prince Edward Island and see this magical place where Anne’s story was set. Gone, gone, gone are all the beautiful pictures.
• Saguenay. That was hands down the port that gave our ship the warmest greeting. I got video of some of their welcoming songs and dances. It’s a shame I won’t be able to relive that again via my pics.
• Quebec City. I think my heart’s mourning the lost Quebec City pics the most. I cried when we were heading out that morning and I caught my first glimpse of the Chateau Frontenac. That was a place on my bucket list.  And the best part was the Lido deck provided a fantastic vantage point for taking pictures of the hotel. Not to mention the city itself. There were also some pics I had taken while on the ghost tour, and of the Fields of Abraham…It just kills me to think of all the great shots I’ll never see again. I loved it there. I was looking forward to being able to be transported back any time I wanted via my pics. I’m just heartsick I can’t now.

THE PRECIOUS FEW

Luckily I did upload the New York City pictures and the Newport pictures to Facebook. At least there are those. And I uploaded a few other cruise pictures to the blog when I did my Thinking of You post.

But only a very, very few. I was saving up to do a play by play of each port city.

Now I’m plagued by thoughts of shoulda, coulda, woulda…if I had just taken time to download the others to Facebook or Flickr, or backup like I’d meant to, I would still have those pictures and I wouldn’t know this pain and frustration.  

MORAL OF THE STORY

Maybe my tragedy will help avert another one. Don’t miss the boat like I did. Have you backed up your important files today?
