I thought I’d do something a little different again for Movie Monday: list the horror movies I’m watching this Halloween season.
It was inspired by last week’s Movie Monday Party Express stop to Nate’s Peer Review and his Part 1 review of Halloween film classics, as well as by some of the other blogs I’ve seen discussing scary movies lately, such as:
- Blackwood
- Ghost Hunting Theories (In particular her Which Horror Movie Should You Watch Quiz. Also, every week she does a run down of paranormal movies and TV shows airing that week.)
- iZombie
- Orange and Black (She’s been writing about a lot of the old black and white B movies of the ’30s and ’40s. Love it!)
I have a feeling I might’ve missed a blog or two. Please forgive me. The above were the ones that were freshest in my mind. (To try and make it up, please feel free to leave links to any of your horror movie blog posts in the comments below.)
Anyway, my list is rather ambitious. Especially considering I’ve only watched one scary movie lately (Seamstress). If the weather would ever hurry up and turn sour instead of being so gorgeous, I may finally get an opportunity to stay inside and catch up on all the horror flicks I want to see!
At any rate, whether I get to them all or not will remain to be seen, but the below are the ones top on my must-see Halloween viewing list:
- Carriers (Haven’t heard much about this one but I’m a sucker for virus-apocalypse movies. Hopefully I’ll enjoy it.)
- Trick ‘r Treat (I’ve still not seen this one yet, but every time I hear others talking about it they’ve given it good reviews.)
- Sorority Row (Another one I’ve not yet seen. I know it got mixed reviews, but I sort of like these whodunit-ish style slasher flicks.)
- Waxwork / Waxwork II – Lost in Time (I had to laugh when I read the review on Amazon about these movies. “…genre cultists are pretty much the exclusive audience here.” I love Waxwork. Waxwork II is okay also, but the first one just really appeals to me for some reason. Maybe because it transports me back to the ’80s and happy coming of horror age horror movie memories. Who knows? All I know is my husband’s forever trying to figure out the appeal. I’ll have a new answer for him this year, “It’s because I’m a genre cultist, honey!”)
- The Cottage (I haven’t heard anything about this movie. All I know is it looked pretty good. Something about kidnappers who take their victim to a cottage, the victim turns the table on them, but there’s a demented farmer next door they really all need to worry about more than themselves. An enticing premise in my book!)
- The Road (I’m not sure what to expect from this one. I didn’t really hear much about it when it was in theaters, but it’s gotten decent reviews on Netflix. It sounds interesting to me, so I’ll give it a shot. ‘Tis the season, right?)
- I Am Legend (Widescreen Single-Disc Edition) (A lot of people didn’t really like this movie. Or they thought it was just so so. I loved it. It’s one of my faves. I enjoy watching it again and again.)
- The Mist (This was another movie a lot of my horror movie loving friends did not care for. This is my favorite Stephen King story. I lovedthe novella. I loved it so much it was the first book on tape I ever bought. And I happened to love how they did the ending for the movie. It was much darker and more disturbing than how the written story ended. In my opinion it’s one of the best non-ABC mini-series Stephen King movies ever made. Horror-wise. Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and Stand By Me will always rate high, but they’re not horror.)
- Shaun of the Dead (Another of my all-time faves. It’s a good one to put in the mix. Add a little levity to the scary line-up.)
- Halloween (There is only one night I truly enjoy watching this movie and that’s Halloween. Inevitably it seems I put it on as the trick or treaters are starting to show up, so I don’t always actually watch the whole thing. But as long as I get to hear the theme song on Halloween night? My Halloween is complete!)

Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, as well as obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.

Just wanted to comment on 2 of the movies you put on your list.
First, Trick R Treat is MUST SEE. It’s one of the few movies on Halloween that is actually about the holiday itself. I picked it up on Blu and it is now part of my movie watching tradition. I am very interested to hear your thoughts after viewing it.
Second is The Road. I had the pleasure of reading the book and seeing the movie. It isn’t a horror movie per se, but a great look at a father and son trying to survive in a post apocolyptic world. The movie was pretty good, but I literally lost sleep over the book.

Love Trick R Treat – you will too! But be warned The Road is a great movie….but very hard to watch. Great version of the book, I think that is as close as they could get. I was impressed.

Love Trick r Treat and Halloween. Sorority Row was much better than I expected. Carriers was good as well. I don’t really feel I Am Legend as a horror movie. Having Will Smith in it, you know he ain’t dying.
See? Even more votes for Trick R Treat. It should be here Friday. VERY excited to see it now thanks to you all confirming what else I’d heard.
And Joe, you cracked me up. You helped validate I might have picked good movies. Looking forward to seeing all these others you mentioneed now. But Will did die in I Am Legend…and so did his co-star dog. That’s why that makes it a horror movie for me…his good dog died! (I hate when the animals die in movies, especialy when they’re treated so much like people and characters unto themselves.)
