Haunted Circus Day: Scary Clowns

Beware clowns with sharp teeth

Today is Circus Day. When I heard it was coming up, the first thing I thought of was clowns. Scary clowns.

Actually, aren’t all clowns scary? I’ve racked my brain trying to think of one clown who hasn’t freaked me out.

There was a morning show in Denver when I was growing up called Blinky’s Fun Club. The host was a clown. Blinky was a lovable guy, but I never wanted to go on the show because lovable as Blinky was, he was still a clown. Scary!

I thought it’d be fun to test the limits of those with mild cases of coulrophobia (such as myself) by turning circus day into a haunted affair. I collected some of the scariest clown clips I could find from YouTube, and put together a list of the clowns that have freaked me out most.

If you have any, feel free to leave links to your favorite scary clown stuff in the comments, or tell me which clowns I didn’t have on the list that have scared you most.

Without further ado, let me welcome you to my circus. Bring in the clowns!

  1. Clowns have always scared me and my on has a crippling fear of clowns.  He can’t get his face painted or go to the circus.  Clowns are terrifying.

  2. I can’t say I find clowns scary, though I recall that quite a few of the theatre majors in school had problems with clown day during makeup class. I really wonder what the psychology behind the fear is. We were taught in class that most of the exagerrations that goes into making a clown are based upon the features of babies (i.e. big eyes and mouths) and most of us are not fearful of babies. So what is it? Perhaps too many horror movies based upon clowns?

I do, however, find the Insane Clown Posse very scary. :-)

  3. Wait a minute. I grew up in Denver and I remember Blinky’s Fun Club. He was a bad hobo clown…. :)

  4. You grew up in Denver too???? AND you remember Blinky???? CRAZY! I had forgotten he was a hobo clown. ACK!

  5. Wow. Now there’s an interesting point. Apply clown makeup to highlight baby-like features. I love how you pull from your theatre backgroud like you do. You come up with some really novel ways of looking at things, Lewis!

  6. Clowns make me uncomfortable. Even now at 40 yrs old. There’s just something about them. Kids seem to know this!

  7. Do you suppose that there’s something inherently scary about telling children things that aren’t true (even if the stories are benevolent?). This year, I saw more than my share of creepy Santas, both online and in real life. Then, there’s the whole creepy doll phenomenon. So clowns fit into this same paradigm, it seems to me…childhood is scary enough without …CLOWNS!
