Haunted Shipwrecks: Can Ghosts Haunt Underwater?

This past weekend I got to talking with a friend of a friend from Florida about ghosts. She lives in Jacksonville and, knowing I’d once lived there too, asked if I’d heard about the haunted house in Mayport.

Nope, but it’s something I noted in my “Look Into for a Possible Post” file.

GHOSTS ON THE HIGH SEAS

We then got to talking about coastal ghost stories and sightings and she asked, “What about shipwrecks? Are they haunted too?”

I hadn’t actually heard of any. I had heard of ghost ships –spectral images of ones that had sunk that are reported to still haunt the waters where they’d sailed. But I’d never heard of ghost stories from people who’d explored shipwrecks.

It got us to wondering, “Can ghosts even haunt underwater?”

This was before I had a chance to watch last week’s Destination Truth, which I had recorded and intended to watch over the weekend before my husband surprised me with a birthday party and a house full of guests.

DIVING FOR GHOSTS

The other day I got some time to catch up and watch DT, and boy did my mouth drop when I saw the preview for tonight’s episode. How weird that I’d just been talking about haunted shipwrecks and BAM! Josh and crew will be conducting the world’s first televised underwater paranormal investigation.

I added in “televised” because I have a feeling some divers somewhere have conducted an informal investigation of a haunted shipwreck at some point in time. Maybe they weren’t part of a paranormal investigation group, but I found a video on YouTube (embedded below) about haunted shipwrecks. Divers have most definitely encountered underwater paranormal activity before.

No doubt that’s why Josh and gang are investigating this World War II Japanese Fleet laying at the bottom of the Pacific. Other divers must have reported odd experiences happening there.

HOW DO YOU HUNT GHOSTS UNDERWATER?

I don’t know what they’ll turn up, but if nothing else, just knowing how Josh is and the fact that this is such a novel investigation, it ought to be very entertaining.

(But what a challenging thing to investigate, eh? Can they waterproof the FLIR to use it? What about EVPs? Will they be able to catch any? I’m looking forward to finding out how they gather evidence for this one.)

COOL YOUTUBE VID ABOUT GHOST SHIPWRECKS

P.S.

If you’re thinking maybe haunted shipwrecks was on the friend’s mind because she’d seen the Destination Truth preview, perhaps. She doesn’t watch much TV, though, and she definitely doesn’t watch much Syfy channel. So whether it’s an odd coincidence or she saw a preview that snuck in subliminally, I may never know… All I do know is my interest is now piqued in haunted shipwrecks!)

I can’t speak about ghosts/spirits being underwater, not having been underwater. Yet, I can speak to the fact that lose lost in shipwrecks are frequently seen wandering beaches; along with those who attempted rescue.

Having lived on the beaches in North Carolina; I, along with many others frequently saw them, felt them, or at least felt cold spots, etc.; depending on their level of abilities.

Yep, I sure knew of this phenomenon. I haven’t experienced anything coastal myself, but I know lots of others have. And now you’re added to that list! It’ll be interesting to see what Josh turns up tonight. Might ratchet up paranormal scuba diving expeditions!

“Maggie” was once married to a man, who was a ship’s captain, that his ship went down in the late 60’s and all the crew died and it made the National news. I just wonder, if Captain Watson is wandering the waters with stories to tell?

    Thanks for the newsworthy story!

I’ve read of a handful of cases where divers or investigators on shipwrecks have reported hearing voices and music underwater. Recently, it was reported, I don’t recall where, that investigators were ascending to the site of the Titanic wreck to capture EVPs for a documentary. Evidently, people working on that site had reported experiences with odd sounds including music.

Hey Lewis! That is ABSOLUTELY fascinating! Titanic popped first and foremost to my mind. So crazy you mentioned it because I have it noted on my blog idea list to research any kind of phenomenon like that and write about it in the future. You’ve let me know I just may really find some! THANKS! (P.S. Glad to know of you and your blog now too. ;)
